I see the subject matter of my paintings, ( usually women ) as a vehicle for the pursuit of a particular artistic outcome - i.e. an exercise in representing refracted light, or in using a limited palette of analogous or complimentary colours based on an abstract structure of strong shapes and tone.   If I can weave into this exercise the representation of a mood, of rhythm, or of a suggested meaning, and if this translates to the viewer in a pleasing way, then I have achieved my aim.   Exploring new challenges with each painting keeps me excited about art.   Translating this excitement in turn to...more
I see the subject matter of my paintings, ( usually women ) as a vehicle for the pursuit of a particular artistic outcome - i.e. an exercise in representing refracted light, or in using a limited palette of analogous or complimentary colours based on an abstract structure of strong shapes and tone.

If I can weave into this exercise the representation of a mood, of rhythm, or of a suggested meaning, and if this translates to the viewer in a pleasing way, then I have achieved my aim.

Exploring new challenges with each painting keeps me excited about art. Translating this excitement in turn to my students, in my capacity as a teacher, and presenting them with new challenges, stimulates my imagination and enriches my understanding of art.

Gillian Marklew BA, CDS, EAWS

Gillian Marklew graduated from Leeds Polytechnic with a degree in graphic design in 1981, and embarked on a career as a freelance illustrator, working first in London in the magazine publishing business, then in Cromford, Derbyshire, at the Arkwright mill museum, where Gilly's illustrations can still be seen on the information boards.

Gilly then moved on to work in an advertsing agency back in Leeds until the early 90's, before becoming a full time children's book illustrator with the help of Artist partners illustration agency in London, illustrating 40 books with most big publishers.

in 2004 Gilly became an adult education tutor and still runs regular classes in watercolour and drawing, in and around Cambridge.

It wasn't until 2009 that Gilly began painting watercolours for open exhibitions, and on the first attempt won most popular painting award 2 seasons in a row, at the Cambridge drawing society.

In 2010 Gilly submitted to the Royal Watercolour Society at The Bankside Gallery in London, and was accepted. A few months later she exhibited at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour annual open show at the Mall Galleries in London and won the Ranelagh Press award.

In the autumn of 2010, Gilly exhibited at The East Anglia Watercolour Society Open show won the St. Cuthberts Mill award, and in spring 2011 her work was accepted again at the Royal Watercolour Society show at Bankside.

In Autumn 2011 she won the Tyndall’s Trophy award at The East Anglian Watercolour Society exhibition in Bury St Edmunds.

‘Picnic at Lepe’ was ehibited at the The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour show 2012.

Gilly won the most popular painting vote for the 3rd time, in the autumn 2012 exhibition of the Cambridge drawing society with ‘Repose in a Hammock'.

In September 2013 she won the St Cuthbert’s Mill prize for her painting ‘Exercise in Restraint’ at the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists Autumn Exhibition, and at the same society won another Tindall’s award for 'Mussel man.

Gilly has recently been making video tutorials for a film company called Paintbox art media, otherwise known as Art tutor.com

Gilly also teaches for painting hoilidays.

Gilly teaches Watercolour Painting and Drawing to adult learners at several colleges in the Cambridge area. For details on courses etc please email.
