About Heather Swan

Welcome to my collection of Western art! Cowboys, Ranch art, life on the ranch. Ranching and rural living! My recent work is about capturing the Spirit of the West

I studied Fine Art Studio at Dawson College in Montreal, QC. In 1988, I went on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with Honours in Photography from the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, ON. Upon Graduation I followed a path that lead to Desktop Publishing/Page Layout and Graphic Design. I freelanced at several high tech firms in the Ottawa Region, including: Mainstreet Studios/Newbridge Networks, Canada Post Corporation, and even worked for an Advertising Agency.

I started photographing horses around 1993, when I purchased my first horse. I boarded her at a competitive (Hunter) riding stable—naturally I went to a few shows, took lots of photographs.

In 2001, my husband Paul and I decided to have a family and together decided that I would stay home and raise our son(Brennan). After being a stay-at-home Mom for ten years--it was time to begin again in some new way. Brennan is in grade 4 and more independent, I am able to re-focus and do something that I am passionate about. I am passionate about my family, horses and photography. We live on a hobby farm with three horses, three ponies and a Terrier named Beau.

As a member of the Equine Photographers Network(EPNet), I have studied under some of the world’s most outstanding equine photographers and continue to receive ongoing education in the field of Equine Photography. Over the past few years I have studied the Basics of Equine Photography with Carien Schippers, the Art of the Equine-Human Portrait with Minnesota based Photographer Shelley Paulson. Creating & Marketing Fine Art Photography with Equine Fine Artist, Photographer and Filmmaker Rachael Waller from West Texas. I have had the opportunity to travel to New Mexico and to the Pryor Mountains to attend Wild Horse Workshops with Fine Artist Lynne Pomerantz. I have also gone to the Carolina Foothills, and Colorado on EPNet workshops. Most recently, I had the opportunity to learn post processing techniques from fine art photographer Bobbie Goodrich, a Team Nik™ Software member, and Susan Lei Burns, accomplished videographer and fine art photographer, at their workshop The West…Redefined in beautiful Colorado. I continue to work on my photography skills and my portfolio.
