Photographer Heather Weikel
A native of New England, Heather Weikel has used her artistic eye and love of history to bring together an interesting collection of photographs. For eight years she worked for National Amusements in their advertising department as a graphic designer. By working with clients like MTV, Simon & Schuster, VH1, Showcase Cinemas and the New England Patriots her experience there was not a wasted one. In 2004 she decided to quit the corporate life and join forces with a friend to open The Canvas Alley Gallery in Reading, MA. After a year the doors to the gallery have closed but she has moved on to bigger and better things. In addition to her photography she currently works as a Marketing Specialist/Art Instructor for The Arc of East Middlesex (a non-profit art organization for artist’s with disabilities). Heather also continues to work as a freelance designer for General Goods (Andover), Authentic Awards (Woburn), Pet Collar Attachment (Woburn) and The Arc of East Middlesex (Reading). You can view her design and marketing samples at www.hweikel.com.
Over the years she has experimented in several mediums including sculpture using organic materials, mixed media with fabric, sewing, fashion illustration and her latest passion photography. When Heather was twelve her brother Todd, a then Photo Journalist, introduced her to photography. He taught her the concept of being a “Bee” and how important it was to shoot your subject from numerous angles, like a bee flies around a flower. She was always interested in historical places and later became fascinated by photographing them. The basis of her photographs are that of historical significance and unique perspectives. Whether it is stepping on the campus where Bogart was expelled to where the Pilgrims first stepped upon America have attracted her. “I was raised with the idea that it’s not what you do, it’s how you do it. With that embedded in my brain I have always fought to be different.” stated Heather. “I try to find the “different” in the world and photograph it while learning its historical significance. I want to learn about where America’s first millionaire bought a house as well as where Thoreau wrote Walden. My photography allows for continuity in both imagery and history.”
