About Ion vincent DAnu

I am a Canadian visual artist, born in Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania. I loved to draw as an infant and between 14 and 18 I was an 'apprentice artist' at the Art High School in Sibiu. Then life took over and for about 20 + years art was just an occasional delight... I've returned to my first love, drawing, painting, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, were I've immigrated with my family in the nineties. Since 2003, I'm a full-time professional artist...

I paint mostly in watercolor and acrylics but I cannot stop myself experimenting with all kinds of other themes, materials and styles (The art dealers say this is not good but what the heck!?)

I've learned to take pictures since I was 11-12 years old and a camera is always somewhere near. I use photography as an art in itself and also as an auxiliary source of inspiration and documentation for my drawings and paintings. Recently, I've started to work in the fascinating field of digital art.

Writing is a complementary mean to express myself (and, as Graham Greene, put it once: a therapy.) Being an admirer of Vincent van Gogh I founded a blog called: 'Van Gogh and I' (see at

In fact, what Graham Greene said about writing (and art creating in general) is essential for me too:

'Writing is a form of therapy; sometimes I wonder how all those who do not write, compose or PAINT can manage to escape the madness, the melancholia, the panic fear which is inherent in the human situation. Auden noted: 'Man needs escape as he needs food and deep sleep.'

Art Therapy Here I Come

May 9th, 2014

It seems that doctors die, statistically, at around 57-60 years old, a lot sooner than the “coach patatoes” (statistically), so why trust them entirely and blindly when it comes to our lives? (the statistics are for the US of A) Well, most of us...

Still Kicking...

March 26th, 2014

...and not yet the bucket... I was lucky. I've found at an art supply store a Windsor and Newton easel, a solid one, a real easel for serious artists (one can paint a 2 x 3 m canvases, if so enclined...) at half price. Somehow, I managed to borrow...

There is a Time for Everything

November 16th, 2013

...Ecclesiastes dixit. A time for living and a time for dying. A time for health and a time for sickness. For me, it seems, it's the time for sickness. I've got diagnosed with a rare (they say only about 6000 Americans got it in a year which is 0,...

Between painting and the big C

November 12th, 2013

Around the same date when Robert Genn got his "you got pancreatic cancer" news I also got mine. Don't know if it's pancreatic (hope not!) or what but I know it's cancer. So, I do apologize to the few who still visit my galleries and make comments...

Bouts of Depression

April 22nd, 2012

Vincent had them. In fact, quite often and quite intense. The causes were so different and so many that one can say he was depressed because of…well, life. He was depressed because he couldn’t draw or paint as well as he wished. He was depress...

Of course, some would doubt that he was that lucky (I have doubts myself…) and, of course, he was the legitimate son of Theodorus Van Gogh, the pastor from Nuenen, and not a bastard. But that’s the expression, it seems, when one wants to express,...

It's kind of funny. A few posts away I was writing about PERCEPTIONS. And how everything is a question of perception... Well, my perceptions about Vincent changed. Of course, they changed for a long time and will still change but now I'm talkin...

A wonderful anniversary gift (just had my 56th one) I see that I have today more than 10000 per total visitors and my photo Where Dracula Was Born had more than 1000 visits! Wow!

Van Gogh and I

January 20th, 2012

MAKING A LIVING AS AN ARTIST Some do it and some don’t. There are some very good, excellent, artists who make a living with their art. And there are also some very good, excellent artists who don’t. There are out there some mediocre and even worst...

Danu s World

December 20th, 2011

I was browsing through some of my old photographs, some older than 30 years... 1980...1987... Oh, boy! All those memories came over me like a tornado... Not a lot left, except these scanned images... Eyes to Die For (see photo in my portfolio) ...
