Ismael Cavazos is an artist living and playing in Austin Texas since 1994. The artist's unique way of seeing the world began with seeing images in clouds. Introduced to the Scribble Technique early in his art career, Ismael believed the images he was finding were the result of a kind of super power - the result of much comic book reading. The year was 1988 and at least a half dozen drawings exist from this period. Contributing to the rich history of the Scribble, Ismael went on to innovate in the field creating a vocabulary where there was none. Unlike tea leaf reading which has a name, Tasseography, the reading of scribbles had no title as there was not an art form, only an art therapist's approach or technique. Scribblism became the art and practice of the scribble - and now that there was a name for the piece of pie of art he was working within, the artist realized there was no meta label for the pie, thus was born Abstract Extractionism.
This exciting new terminology, along with an update to Alexander Cozens' The Cozens Method entitled The Cavazos Method, has created a new pair of glasses through which to see the art world. This has given way to whole new approaches to painting and carving! In painting, picking up where Jackson Pollock left off, Ismael has created the Universal Painting Project, finding images in drip paintings of his own as well as those of Pollock. In sculpture, Ismael finds himself the first artist in the world to carve peanuts as an artform. Between selling drip paintings at A.M.O.A and Art In A Nutshell at Lucky Lizard, one can catch up with the artist at one of his exciting Scribble Sessions mostly in Austin but also in Houston.
