Isobel Haslam was born in England in 1962, she graduated with a BA Honours in Art and Design in 1984.and now lives in Hexham in the heart of Northumberland the least populated and most wild county in England.
Isobel has a highly illustrative and fine art approach to surface pattern and design through which she communicates her love and fascination for the natural environment. Images and sensations of places personal to Isobel have been translated into paintings with a kaleidoscopic dream-like quality where colour and pattern collide to dramatic effect. The patterns and forms inherent in nature as well as the textures and minutiae of living things, combine with her appreciation of Asian arts and crafts to become highly elaborate works.
Each work is achieved using multi-layers of gouache applied over hot-pressed paper, in a sense embroidering with the paintbrush, each piece taking weeks of work to complete.
