Though I work at a local university by day, I am a practicing artist by night--or whenever I get the chance to pick up a paintbrush, camera, or piano (though, that's slightly less portable). You might find me in the orchestra pit of a local musical, perched on a Lake Michigan pier trying to paint between wind gusts, or pulled off the side of a country road waiting for the sun to peek around a cloud--in any case, you will find me with a smile on my face and a quick 'hello' in your direction!
In the ongoing pursuit of learning how to improve my skills and looking at life from different angles, I always rediscover the same theme: all of us are artists (yes, you too!). Artistic expression can be found in the everyday interactions we have with all living things...being kind to strangers, playing hide-and-seek with a child, fishing a duckling out of a rain gutter while its mother nervously waits, or creating a loving home (by hanging one of my pictures on your wall, of course!). We are all capable of and designed to create beauty. The trick is to simply observe how you bring joy to other people's lives....and keep doing it!
'The question is not what you look at, but what you see.' ~Henry David Thoreau
