My name is Jay Fries (pronounced freeze) and I am a long time fine art photographer who recently turned professional. I live in Santa Fe in the mountains of northern New Mexico, having moved here from Pennsylvania in 1958. I was educated as a research scientist and spent my first career in research and management at the Los Alamos National Labs (in Los Alamos, NM) in a variety of different projects.
A photographer since childhood (e.g., a black-and-white dark room under the cellar stairs in high school), after retirement and with the advent of digital cameras and photo-editing computer programs I became more serious about photography. I set up my own professional studio, Fries' Fine Fotos, in July of 2010.
My family owned a flower shop and greenhouses and I frequently worked there after school and in the summer. As a result, I developed a great fondness for flowers of all types, and these are frequent subjects for me. Other favorite subjects are people, especially those of different ethnic backgrounds, interesting architecture and its details, animals, birds, other aspects of nature, landscapes, and places of interest in Santa Fe, Northern New Mexico, and elsewhere. I also do panorama photos, both horizontal and vertical, of outdoor scenes such as mountains, churches and street scenes and enjoy doing long exposure night shots.
I have a personal web site, www.friesfinefotos.com with a number of galleries and a sampling of my art.
