Jeanne Smith has been painting for over 25 years and has loved pastels since receiving a gift box of them in 1999. After earning a Ph.D. in English Literature, teaching university English for ten years, and publishing a book on folklore in contemporary novels, Writing Tricksters, Ms. Smith began to pursue her love of art full time. Ms. Smith has studied art at Georgetown University, the duCret School of Art, and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. She teaches art classes privately and through the Concord Art Association, and often demonstrates locally.
Smith is captivated by the way light illumines and glorifies the seemingly mundane, and looks for unexpected moments of beauty, character and life. She captures her initial inspiration quickly, and finds pastel, with its rich colors ready at her fingertips, an ideal medium. She began painting her children when they were very young, and has been taking portrait commissions ever since. She has exhibited her portraits and landscapes nationally and won numerous awards, and her paintings are in collections from Seattle, Washington to Monte Carlo.
