Carnal enjoyed grade school scholarships to a local Art Center in Pontiac Michigan. This is when he claims to have received his first traditional training as an artist and these events lead to his life long pursuit of mastering the arts. Drawing everything around him through his teen years sharpened his skills at rendering perspective environments and characters in charcoal, pencil, pastels, and ink. After picking up an issue of Airbrush Action Magazine he invested in an Iwatta HP-BC airbrush and began seeking commissions around the Detroit Metro Area. Years passed and Carnal’s skill and speed with an airbrush grew stronger as he wandered from city to city. In Phoenix Arizona he began painting in watercolor and oil. He did some work for the Sun City Art Museum in oil for a fundraiser but never put on a show. This new interest in traditional media was sparked by other magazine publications, American Artist, Watercolor, and Juxtapose. In 1999 Carnal enrolled and the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design as a sculpture major. Here the fundamentals of design and drawing were reinforced along with some studio experience with life drawing. He was half way through the program when he became disenchanted with the art scene and became infatuated with science. He transferred to Iowa Western Community College where he began the core classes starting with intro to algebra. Three years later he was a physics major at Creighton University. Educational funding was a problem he was forced to take some time off while his Differential Equation and Calculus skills went cold. In the mean time Carnal wrote and painted the story “Prelude to Faustition”. During this time too he continued to practice his craft at painting in a verity of mediums as well as introduce himself to Adobe Photoshop. This is also when he discovered Conceptart.org and began reading about digital painting. He also took up an apprenticeship at a local tattoo shop in Omaha and administered a few tattoos. In the fall of 2009 school was a possibility again but the math review required to finish the Physics degree at Creighton seemed pretty daunting. Chemistry was an option with two years down, so he registered only to later find a degree in Video Gaming and Simulation offered at Bellevue University irresistible. Currently he is enrolled at Bellevue University and on his way to mastering applications like 3D model sculpting and animation, character design, environments, and matte painting. “Everything seems to happen for a reason” he says, “despite my best efforts I wasn’t supposed to be a physicist and now my life has come full circle and I am, in a sense, right back where I started, doing what I am on earth to do, create”.
