As with many artists, Jerry turned to art professionally after zig-zagging through a few different disciplines. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, then received a PhD from the University of Massachusetts in political science. He has written on the political-economy of the United States and has taught at numerous US universities. He left academia, however, to pursue a career in painting, an activity he has studied formally and has practiced his entire adult life. Today, his writings center on painting, not so much as in the 'how to' genre but more broadly as an expressive activity that enables us to realize our specific abilities, gifts and powers. Jerry lived fourteen years in San Francisco where he was an exhibitor, founder and Executive Director of two outdoor exhibition groups.
Jerry's primary teacher was William Schultz who had studied with Robert Brackman and others whose teachers can be directly linked to the philosophy and practices of Robert Henri, John Singer Sargent and Claude Monet. Jerry also studied briefly with Wolf Kahn, once a student of Hans Hoffman, whose work reflects both traditional and contemporary influences, a virtue Jerry much admires. In 2004, Jerry moved to Lake Como in Italy where he and his wife, Conchitina Miguel, organize painting workshops. Check out his videos on YouTube.
