To the members:
I'll appreciate any help you can give. Please critique (in the appropriate place on this site), with either negative or positive comments (but please be very specific). My purpose is to communicate visually with clarity, drama and meaning - and to get better at that constantly.
To the public:
Am I really a 'fine artist'? You'll be the judge of that. I only know I'm always learning and having big fun - and always will be.
Bio:
Jim Coe is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, where he received the BFA in fine art photography. He later taught photography at that same fine art college for 3 years (the limit allowed at that time). Jim has always been passionately interested in light and color. As a kid, long before 3D modeling and digital scene generation on personal computers became possible, he was building and photographing plaster-of-paris scenes and populating them with his models.
He started making photos at the age of 9 and began developing his own film and making prints at 14. While working as his high school paper's photographer, he learned the basics of photography and applied them to other interests - modeling, aviation and science. While at the Art Institute, Jim completed several experiments on human visual perception, perfected his use of Ansel Adam's 'Zone System' for view cameras and visited with many bay area photographers, including Ansel. He also completed an intensive 10 day workshop with Minor White.
Jim's interest in light and color led him to help Invent the 'light shows' of the late 1960's. He was a partner in one of the first two light shows in the world (called the 'Holy See'), during the Height Ashbury scene in San Francisco. He did light shows for all the music shows at the original Fillmore Auditorium and worked at the performances of the top rock bands of that era. Jim also invented several 'light sculptures' and laser projection light effects.
