I am attracted to dry pastels because I find working with them so physical -- I can push the powder around with my fingers to blend it, and I feel it marry itself to the page. I donít like to have anything, such as a brush. between my skin and the texture of the chalk and paper. I have been doing art for over 30 years, painting with acrylics, making and casting Japanese paper, yet pastels remain my favorite medium, so I have concentrated on pastel art since 2010.
I was raised in New York City and as a child I visited a different museum every Saturday, often studying for a long time one picture or a sculpture or piece of furniture, trying to understand it and how the artist made it. Looking analytically is the best way to learn about the aesthetics of art, concepts such as composition, color theory, different techniques.
The landscape of Alaska, where I live, illuminated by the latitude of the sun and the angle of its light, with its clarity of air, the reflectivity of the snow in winter, the long vistas and untouched nature, is an unending source of inspiration. Colors here are brilliant and pure. Through painting I am recognizing and expressing how beautiful the world is. When I share my work by showing or selling it, I am sharing my joys and passions.
I am also on Facebook, where you can see the newest works and follow events such as where I have shows. Thank you for your interest!
