Still Photography, lifestyle, etc.

Multi-faceted photographer John Lee Montgomery III has been capturing images and personalities on film since his early teens. The extensive wanderings of his earlier years captured the young man’s imagination and allowed him to see the endless parade of images that were in front of him, fueling John's desire to become a professional photographer. After relocating to Nashville 18 years ago, Montgomery established himself as one of the most creative photographers in the music business with his strong emphasis on communication, location and lighting techniques.
Montgomery prefers to delve beneath the facade of his subject into the true persona of the person whose image he is hired to capture. “I strive hard to bring out the unique personality of the individual or group,” John says, “and thereby capture that ‘real’ moment in time. The key to a successful shoot is to put the participants at ease, and to just have fun. That's how I actually capture the true story as well as the intensity and energy of the moment.”
With his easygoing manner and honest curiosity about people, Montgomery is able to put his subjects at ease, which makes it easy for him to get the shots he wants. “I prefer to actually meet, have a cup of coffee, and get to know the person prior to the shoot. Once I make a connection I feel that we can actually get down to the business of creating an image,” Montgomery explains. “It is my job to make the person look great, but I also believe it is my job to portray more than what you see when you look at someone. People convey their innermost thoughts in the way they sit, look at the camera and dress for the shoot.”
John grew up in the city but has roots that run deep in the country. His father is a retired ophthalmologist and has a farm in East Tennessee where he breeds Red Angus. His grandfather was an eye surgeon as well as a noted leader in the Polled Hereford industry. Montgomery majored in marketing and economics with a minor in sociology and German. He refined his technique as a photographer while assisting in photo studios while attending school in Atlanta. His travels have taken him from the mountains of East Tennessee to the beaches of Florida and the forests of Africa.
During John’s time in Nashville, where he currently bases, he photographed almost every major music artist in Nashville today, capturing their history by documenting thousands of recording sessions, music video shoots and press conferences. He has covered numerous concerts, media receptions, and photographed a number of album covers. He has worked with a myriad of companies within the music business community including Warner Bros., Capitol Nashville, RCA Nashville, Country Radio Broadcasters’ CRS, the Country Music Association’s Music Festival and Sony Records, to name just a few.
John’s photos have been published around the world, including the Nissan Pavilion in the District of Colombia, the New York Times, Country Weekly, American Cowboy, American Songwriter, The Quilter Magazine, Country Song Roundup, Country Music Today, Billboard, Music Row, People and USA Today, not to mention the rest of the world. He has had images published in books about the entertainment industry, including books by John Lomax III, record producer Jimmy Bowen and singer/songwriter Susie Luchsinger. Album covers include Ricky Skaggs (Skaggs won a Grammy for this CD), Blue Highway and Billy Burnett, formerly with Fleetwood Mac.
Celebrity Shots include: Tim McGraw, Shania Twain, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, Martina McBride, Lonestar, Diamond Rio, Gretchen Wilson, Faith Hill, Trace Adkins, Neal McCoy, Trisha Yearwood, Terri Clark, Wynonna Judd, The Dixie Chicks, Billy Ray Cyrus, Montgomery Gentry, Lee Ann Womack, LeAnn Rimes, Travis Tritt, Clint Black, Darryl Worley, Gary Allan, Blake Shelton, Andy Griggs, Dirks Bentley, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Patty Loveless, Jo Dee Messina, Sara Evans, Phil Vassar, Randy Travis, Hank Williams Jr., John Michael Montgomery, Big & Rich, Hanna McEuen, Buddy Jewel, Joe Nichols, Chris Cagle, Cowboy Troy, Hank III, Holly Williams and the proverbial many others, which in this case actually means hundreds!
While working with SPI and Director Fred Davis (Strategic Perception Inc.) over the last few years John has photographed a number of well-known politicians including Senator Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina; Governor Sonny Perdue of Georgia; Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher; and Tennesseans Fred Thompson, Jim Bryson, Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander that were used for their campaigns in their home states.
Montgomery also works as a videographer, having done film, commercials and video shoots. He is currently working with a group of people who are filming a movie in Tennessee later this year.
John also is into creative images, taking an ordinary sunflower and turning it into a stunning art piece. He has done the same with such subjects as old police cars, a row of concrete statues, a wonderfully colored horse, a lone cactus in the desert and a bridge that seemingly climbs to nowhere over a beautiful body of water beneath a moon-lit sky. Montgomery is currently working on his first photography book drawn from his thousands of images of artists and the music industry.
