My subjects are both natural and architectural. I am interested in textures and shapes and how light and shadow play on those objects often creating new ones. I use a Nikon D-100. a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300, and an iPhone 4s.
I make every effort to compose in the camera and thus I crop infrequently. I use Aperture and Photoshop to work with highlights & shadows which often brings out the elements in a photograph for which I have primary interest. I have no hesitation using any other tool if the results make the photograph work. My preference is to do nothing to a photograph presenting it as it was taken.
My web site is named light & shadows because both light and shadows are the visual elements which hold the most fascination for me. If time and space put me in a day and place with clouds or overcast skies — I shoot in any case. However, I am happiest when the sun is low and the shadows long and distinct.
I spend a long time with any set of photographs deciding which to move into galleries on my web site. The photographs which finally get printed are another smaller set. All the photographs are printed on photographic paper by a commercial photo house to my specifications. Every photograph is named. Each work is signed & numbered on the print face, and on the back. Included on the back is a label with the name, year, descriptive narrative and geographic location.
I mount, mat and frame all of my work. I use double color mats. All materials are of archival quality. My presentation for the public includes matted prints in sizes of 8 x10, 11 x 14 and 16 x 20. Framed work is offered in 12 x 16, 16 x 20, and 22 x 28 frames. I also have a selection of pieces presented on canvas.

I’d like to report that this was a fantastic show for sales. The crowds were good enough on Saturday, and almost not there at all on Sunday. This was my first time at this show so maybe nex...

There is no question that this in a craft fair. It is even more so as time goes on, but it is well run and close to home. These are attributes which make it attractive.
I also have visits from people I know which is rare in non...

I always debate about these little shows, but I decided to try it this year. Nice show, and it is not so little with 44 vendors, and it really was a ‘fine art” fair! The topper was that it was held in the Hamburg Public Library. Nice, I...
Art in the Park - Holland
August 3, 2013
I always look forward to the Holland show because it is a well run show. Bonnie Lowe manages it, and there is rarely a hitch.
The show is held in Centennial Park in the downtown area of Holland near Ho...

I’ve know for a long time that Lansing is bereft of lakes, and that not too far to the east of here the map is dotted in lakes. This is where Commerce Township is located. This is where the upper reaches of the H...
July 13 & July 14, 2013
There are a lot of art fairs that are called ‘Art in the Park’! It is kind of like naming the Robin the State of Michigan bird. Really!!
However, whatever the name the results are what counts. The results are heavily inf...
I’ve come to the conclusion that anyone responsible for an art show should be required to have at least done the circuit as a solo for three years. They would have learned in that time that when a show claims to have booth sitte...
The nice thing about Reeds Lake Art Festival is that it really is an art fair and not a festival. If there was a kettle corn stand somewhere for once it was not in front of my booth!
One day shows are great but exhausting since the load-in and loa...
When a show says they are an ‘Art Fair’ it should:
- not look like a carnival at the county fair grounds.
- not have the booth locations so poorly marked it is hard to tell where the canopy is supposed to be positioned.
- not have a local radio ...
It was cool and supposed to rain. It was and it did. There was also a huge generator for the elephant ear’s trailer. The generator ended up being OK because as it ran it sounded like water in one of those big air conditioning units. Not bad. The rain...
May 4th & May 5th 2013 at the Chelsea Michigan Fairgrounds. It was nice that the show was going to be inside because the first weekend in May is often difficult. The weather was actually glorious.
I will not belabor the fact that attendance was ab...
