Artist's Statement I create digitally enhanced artwork based on my own photography – a process I call painting with light. Working with various digital filters and texture layers I modify the original image to achieve a more stylistic, painterly feel which highlights the detail in the areas that catch my eye. My technique has been inspired by several contemporary graphic artists and photographers, particularly Melissa Gallo, Joel Olives and Kim Klassen. I love to travel, and to capture images of the people and places that I visit. I find myself particularly drawn to reflected light, and many of my works include water and boats.
Biography Julia is a self-taught, British-born artist who prefers to think of herself as a citizen of the world! She combines her eye for detail with her love of color and texture, blending her original photographs with texture layers, selective coloring, and occasionally with words, phrases, or quotations, to create inspirational and original reflections of the world around her. An Essex girl by birth, Julia spent her early childhood living in Kabete (a small suburb to the north of Nairobi) in Kenya, and her teenage and young adult life in England and Scotland. More recently she has lived and worked in Portugal and the United States.
Julia's deep love of broad vistas, wildlife, and sun-baked ochre-colored earth, she ascribes to the vibrant colors, rhythmic sounds, and stunning scenery of her early surroundings, whilst her later childhood and early adult life gave her an appreciation of both the gentle, rolling countryside of 'Constable country' and the more rugged environs of the west of Scotland, where she attended the University of Glasgow to study veterinary medicine. Meanwhile, her years spent in Portugal - its Moorish architecture surrounded by hillsides dotted with cork oaks, almonds, olives, carobs, and figs – helped to develop the poetry in her soul!
Today, Julia is delighted to call Shepherdstown (the oldest town in West Virginia) home. But as for tomorrow ... travel and adventures farther afield - with all the photo opportunities that go with it - seem on the horizon for Julia and her husband Dave!
