Karel Doruyter was born in Rotterdam, Holland, and came to Canada at an early age growing up in the interior of British Columbia. He attended the University of BC from 1961 to 1968. During this time he had his own studio and also supported himself as a graphic artist.
For the next 40 years he worked, taught artclasses and painted in both the northern and southern hemisphere. He developed an interest in boat construction and sailing which enabled him to experience the places he painted. While residing in Victoria BC he became a full time artist/illustrator.
At present Karel Doruyter lives in Penticton painting, writing, illustrating and being involved with Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. He is past president of the Island illustrators Society and a signature member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. His work can be found internationally.
