Karen's Art reflects her love of vibrant color and her background in design, crafts, fashion and decorative arts. She grew up in a creative 'do it yourself' family where projects were ongoing. Learning to sew and knit by age 7, designing and making most of her clothes and studying fashion design led her into a brief career in the design department of a clothing company. As a 'freelancer,' she also worked in custom faux finishing, stenciling, hand-painted furniture and numerous sewing projects.
As a partner (with her husband) in a software development company, she focused on graphic design, desktop publishing and business administration. After many years of 'making a living' on a computer, she returned to school at CCSF to study oil painting, figure drawing, museum drawing ('Atelier'), watercolor, pastels and printmaking.
Influenced by Classicism, Impressionism, Fauvism, Aestheticism and Japanese woodblocks, Karen integrates a variety of disciplines into her work by adding overlays of watercolor, stencils, chine colle paper and collage elements. She continues to advance her printmaking and painting skills by exploring new techniques, mediums and artists who inspire her.
