Kathleen McElwaine Artist Bio
B 1951
I grew up on a small quarter horse ranch in Tulsa, Oklahoma with a full-fledged cowboy Daddy. Much of my childhood was spent, sketchbook in hand, in the front seat of a ‘54 Chevy pickup truck at the closest calf roping. Through the windshield of that old truck, I developed a love for art and animals. I documented sights common to that town’s rodeo—a black and white collie working the roping calves, a horse being saddled, the barn cat chasing a mouse; a flat tire being changed on a trailer while the horse stands tied.
My first art instructor’s payment was Nocona cowboy boots, in trade from our family-owned sporting goods store. My high school teacher recognized that my art education was serious to me, and encouraged me to participate in competitions for prizes of college art classes.
I won often and accumulated various awards. College gave me the opportunity to study art history and art appreciation as well as painting and drawing. This provided me with an in-depth look into great art and artists through the centuries. Now, whether I am painting on location or in my studio, I remember that child and the discipline of my formal education. My goal as a professional artist is that my art will bring enjoyment to the viewer and hold its value.
