About Kathleen McElwaine

“Find time each day to paint freely, creatively, without purpose or direction - so you will always remember how to play with colors.”

This was advice given to me by my first art instructor, Jay O'Meilia.. Now, 30 or more years later, it is still guidance I hold dear and do my best to live out each day. The act of painting to simply paint - to reveal what is within, to let creativity bloom, to let my watercolors flow freely - is something that grows in significance to me each time I sit down and pick up my brush. The alchemy of watercolor painting lies not in technique, but rather in painting from the heart.
As Jay told me, “Always remember that when you came to me to teach you, it was to teach you about colors.” Jay understood that his teaching only extended to technique. The rest was up to me. The paintings in this portfolio are the result of daily painting time. They are from my discipline of allowing for my creative time each day. Each watercolor is as unique as the day it was painted. Making a living as an artist requires me to sell my art. With this in mind, I price my art, considering many factors - yes, size and subject; but the main consideration is how spot on is this a product of me, my art, my signature. If a certain piece is out of your price range but you are convinced that it needs to be added to your personal collection, please speak up. I believe each painting is painted for someone in particular, and that someone most likely is you.
Kathleen is a full-time artist, author, and teacher. If you are visiting Georgetown Texas, let me know you are coming for details of how to find my teaching studio located on the square in most beautiful downtown Georgetown, Texas.
