Keith Burgess is an accomplished fine artist, working primarily in oil. He has received awards, numerous commissions, many one-man shows, and also teaches. His work is collected worldwide.
He began drawing as a child and painting as a teenager but his formal art education began at Valdosta State University and continued at Georgia Southwestern State University where he earned a B.A. Degree. After college he began a long career as a graphic artist/illustrator for a major publishing corporation in Atlanta. Though he set aside painting during the early part of his corporate tenure, the urge to paint again lead him to pursue a fine art career on a serious level in the early 1990's. He then began studying with some of the Nation's top artists, attending classes and workshops in his spare time. In 2003 he left the corporate world to become a full time painter and now resides in the Georgia mountain town of Hiawassee on beautiful Lake Chatuge and continues to fulfill his passion for painting.
Statement:
'I have always known that I would be an artist, even during the periods in my life when I did not act upon that knowledge. Over time my art has become a refuge from loss and transformation, as well as the answer to life's most profound questions.
While the human figure continues to interest me, I consider myself primarily a landscape painter, and oil my medium of choice. Like many before me, I find in the landscape a kind of spirituality and truth. I am honored to place myself in that long tradition of representational painters who have been inspired by the natural world around us. From a young age I have been attracted to the early Impressionists, especially Monet, and continue to be influenced by their methods and theories. My goal with every new painting is to try to improve upon the execution of the classical elements of art, such as composition, drawing, form, and above all, color. My fascination with light is revealed through a pursuit of clean, harmonious, vibrant color while using temperature and value selectively to create a feeling of distance and the progression of atmosphere. What attracts me to a particular scene is a pleasing arrangement of shapes and color created by the play of luminous light and shadow, usually found at the beginning and end of day.
The best advice I ever received as an artist was to 'squint' at my subject.'
