Kim Sobat is an abstract and impressionist painter in living in central North Carolina. Her evocative oil and acrylic paintings elicit strong emotions and memories that captivate and engage. The intriguing result is a mix of sentimental and a touch of macabre, offering a unique viewpoint in the contemporary art scene.
Kim's work starts with strong composition which acts as a road map allowing the viewer to explore without getting lost. She pays particular attention to balance, which she finds as crucial to her paintings as it is to life. Once these foundational elements are in place, Kim follows her instincts and whims.
She always likes to have something she refers to as a “sweet spot” in her paintings. Kim describes this spot as an endorphin inducing, spa-like place to where the eye wants to return. For Kim, painting and creating is not particularly relaxing, but rather is an introspective journey. She finds painting with oils and acrylics the best method of expressing her visions due to their immediacy, versatility and textural nature.
Kim enjoys cooking everything from colorful, exotic dishes to grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. While she loves travel, she is admittedly bad at relaxing, and consequently is drawn to large cities for their energy, grittiness, and eclectic cultural offerings. Recently, Kim has taken up fine jewelry design, a hobby which she describes as “turning on the other side of her brain”. Kim’s husband of 23 yrs. has always been her biggest champion, from helping her build her studio to giving daily moral support. Together they have two adult children.
