Born on that fateful day that physicists under the University of Chicago stadium started the first successful chain reaction, mother and I were a mere twenty miles away in Hinsdale Illinois. My father was not present, for he was in the army stationed in the Aleutian islands below Alaska waiting to defend our country against a possible Japanese invasion. The atom became somewhat of a metaphor for my life. Although small in stature and timid by nature, big things and ideas always interested me. When bullied at school my dad used to say, 'just remember a stick of dynamite is small but very powerful'.
When our family bought our first black and white TV I became addicted to the old serial movies, especially Flash Gordon starring Buster Crabbe. I began playing trumpet in fourth grade and went on to major in music in college. My real interest was Jazz, but at that time it was not considered legitimate music. We had to learn those skills on our own. I put the trumpet away a few years ago but still play jazz piano for my own amusement. Today I am exploring art, also an early interest. Influenced by Mad magazine in the 50's - parodying things and people is still what I am about.
