Welcome to my FineArtAmerica gallery. My name is Leigh Carnachan and I’m a contemporary black velvet artist and illustrator. I created this gallery in order to share with others my passion for black velvet painting, earthly paradises, off-world dreamscapes and ancient mysticism.
I was born & raised in Aotearoa (New Zealand) on the west coast of Taranaki and currently live with my partner and daughter in Brisbane on the east coast of Australia. I’m a child of the 60’s still obsessed with the classic and campy science fiction film, television, literature, architecture and art from that era. Old seafaring tales of faraway lands, myths, legends and exotic cultures also dominate my imagination and inspire me to bring it all to life on black velvet. I choose black velvet to paint on because I love its unique depth of shade & light as well as its luxurious texture.
Though initially I started out painting simple iconic subjects, I've now moved on to more detailed and meaningful works. With each painting I try to capture some essence of serenity and mystique that contemporary black velvet paintings can provide. At night when the right lighting is used, the paintings can positively glow and become quite luminous and ethereal on the wall, radiating a wonderful feeling of peace and calm.
My main motivation and greatest wish for my velvet art is to bring some sort of serenity into ones home to view, chill-out, talk, contemplate or even just have a giggle or two. For me there is nothing more fulfilling than creating art that helps create a smile and a positive vibe.
