Les spent his childhood exploring the rim rocks surrounding Billings, Montana and in his teen years he had the good fortune of calling the North Entrance to Yellowstone Park, Gardiner, MT his home. He served in Vietnam in 1969-70 and returned to Yellowstone Park where he began his Federal career as a fire lookout on Mt.Holmes. He received his B.F.A. from the University of Montana in 1978 while working summers in Yellowstone.
