As a painter I have drawn inspiration from the mountains and streams I have loved since childhood. My summer vacations as a kid weren't complete until we were abusing the family Volvo on back country roads throughout the western United States. These trips, and a degree in Geography from Humboldt State University, helped me further develop an appreciation for the shapes and colors around me.
I like to think of my work as geography run amok. I take my eye for the physical landscape and shape it into slightly surreal pieces that are touched with emotion. The shapes and patterns I see around me influence the spirits and topography of these ethereal dreamscapes: the curves of mountains and rivers, the density of clouds, the movement of limbs and leaves and hair.
I work primarily in gouache, though I do explore with ripped paper, oil pastel, acrylic and pastel. I use gouache in diverse ways, from thin washes to smudges of paint straight from the tube. I often apply wax paper to the wet paint and leave it on until it is dry, leaving behind unpredictable patterns that I can embellish.
Born and raised in Southern California, I currently live in a multigenerational household in Northeast Portland.
