You love paintings, you would love to paint but you have trained yourself as a photographer. Can you merge your two artistic passions? I didů.
I grew up admiring classic paintings, specially the Renaissance and the Dutch Golden Age periods. There is one particular feature of Dutch Golden Age paintings that led me to believe that I could try to reproduce them. Their level of detail is unparalleled in painting history, they look like photographs. Some are so detailed, that they can trick you into the removal of an ant or to scare away a fly.
I decided to use a photographic camera to replace the hard work of the brushes, paint, the strokes. This is how I came up with the concept of Photographic Painting, which is the creation of a Painting-like image with photographic equipment and techniques. I have focused on paintings and themes from the Dutch Golden Age: Vermeer genre paintings, Floral Bouquets, Pronkstilleven, Onbijts and Vanitas.
It has been hard, the objects used to create these painting-like images or photopaintings are not readily available today. It has taken hard work, research, creativity and manual work to obtain some and create others. Some of these works are meant to replicate existing classic masterpieces, therefore it has taken sometimes weeks or months before obtaining all the objects required. My intention was to replicate first, then to innovate and create, which is line with any learning experience.
This leads to my most current work which based on Vermeer. After a very intense research on his works, personal life and life in XVII Century United Provinces, I have entered a new phase where I am first to create the story, then the corresponding image. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do.
