Lew Griffin's artistic career began at an early age under the tutelage of his father who himself was an Artisan who fashioned and built stainless steel cabinets and Soda Fountains for the New Jersey Soda Fountain Equipment Company in Newark, New Jersey. He taught Lew to make ash trays from tin and copper using a mold and ball ping hammer. His mother, an elementary school teacher, was always bringing home some art or craft project for him to work on under her discerning eye.
Upon graduating from high school, Lew spent the next 23 years traveling the world and studying in the United States Navy. He studied Philosophy at Old Dominion University along with the Humanities which he credits with getting his creative juices flowing again.
In 2004 Lew began to create art by painting. His love of Jazz Music inspired him to use bright, dynamic color combinations. Early on it was clear that he painted differently. one Art Critic has said ' Mr. Griffin breaks all the rules but he makes it work. He takes what he needs where he finds it. His techniques and materials convey his own vision. Assigning him to this or that school or camp is an exercise in futility.' One of Lew's favorite quotes comes from the late Jazz Fusion Pioneer, Miles Davis. Davis said , ' Music is art you can hear. Art is music you can see.
