.LIZ MARSHALL BIO/ARTIST STATEMENT
The artist formerly known as the DUCHESS OF WHIMSEY
LIZ MARSHALL was an elementary school teacher in Winnipeg before she moved to Penticton in 1979 where she raised her three children. Her creative outlet found its place then in drawing and calligraphy classes at night school. Encouragement and support from friends and family sent her on the long trek of formalizing her education, and in 1999 she received her BFA from UBC Okanagan. Liz has taught art through the Okanagan Summer School of the Arts, the Naramata Centre, Continuing Ed at OUC Penticton and with Coolarts in Kelowna, an organization that offers arts workshops for adults with special needs. More recently her painting Belle was chosen for the wine label of a pinot gris at Therapy Vineyards and she has been the head judge for the Reimagine Penticton Street Art Festival.
Spring of 2012 was a busy time with a group show at the new Tumbleweed
Gallery in Penticton , plein air painting and art hanging at Hillside winery and a solo show that will be on until the end of summer 2012 at Perseus Winery on Lower Bench Road in Penticton.
Her work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions in the Okanagan Valley and
Vancouver. She currently draws and paints at home or with friends.
“my work is often about something joyful,,, children, women holding hands (my long-time theme which started by folding paper and cutting 'paper dolls' joined together) continues to dominate my canvases.... however i do venture into abstractions of sorts and like to replicate the scene of a dining table after a potluck or dinner party... i like to draw and doodle and keep records of things i see but i usually rely on my visual memory more when i paint... acrylics work well for me and i go in spurts of loving different colours and palettes,,, however i tend to favour red.... it is my favourite colour….. i must add here that with new artist friends comes new ideas and I am beginning to play with gel lifts of drawings i have done over the years…. they can then become part of a collage/painting….”..
