I started drawing in pencil back in 1974. I was inspired by my father who only did art as a hobby and nothing more. I would take his art set and copy, not trace, the images I saw. As I grew my art began to take shape but I never did anything with it mainly because I didn't feel I was good enough to compete with other artists. Before 2005 I never took an art class. Most of my art was self taught from reading art books. My art was sketches in pencil and was more a hobby than a job.
Although family members say that I was a good artist I didn't feel like it. I wanted to know more on how to draw better so I took some college courses hoping it would fine tune my talent. When I first stepped into my art class I felt out of place. Everyone in the class seemed to have taken art classes before except me. After a few assignments, my professor asked me to try a different medium. My new medium turned out to be Charcoal. As soon as I laid the charcoal on paper my art work came alive.
I have had a few art pieces show cased in galleries around Flint, Michigan and I have thought about displaying some art in other galleries but don't feel like I am ready. I am hoping that maybe this site and it's members will give me the courage to step up a notch and display my more art.
Charcoal art has now become my medium of choice. i am not great at blending color so, painting will have to wait. I have thought about trying the world of paining but I will sit this one out for now.
