Louise Green

I specialise in Equine Art - portraying horses in pastel or oils. Other subjects I like to paint are lansdscapes, fantasy & animals.
Born in Newcastle, NSW Australia I have been drawing horses since the age of 3. I spent my school age years in Auckland, New Zealand & took Art as a subject at High School, entering a pencil drawing of my first horse in an Equine magazine Art Competition at the age of 13 - winning 2nd prize. I sold my first horse sketch at 15, then went onto sell more work after leaving school. Working with racehorses as a teenager gave me inspiration for further drawings.

Returning to Australia in 1980 I studied Showcard Ticketwriting & Calligraphy at Newcastle TAFE College, NSW. In 1992 I moved to the Mid North Coast & enrolled in a short pastel course in 1996, as well as oil painting tuition a year later. I began exhibiting my work in 1991 & have since won over 70 awards for my paintings. Pastels are a wonderful medium for portraying the beauty of the horse, they capture the softness & reality of these gorgeous animals. Oils give a richness & depth to Equine studies. At times I will use acrylics, when I want to work quickly. This is how my 'Painted Ponies' series came about - bright coloured Paint & Appaloosa horses full of energy & spirit.

Breeding & showing my own Paint & Quarter Horses for many years gave me plenty of experience studying their conformation & anatomy, as well as numerous subjects to paint. Inspiration for my work comes from a variety of sources - sometimes dreams & other times from the beauty that surrounds me - in the unique flora & fauna of the native Australian bush, flowers in the garden, my love for all things equine & a fascination for magic & fantasy.

My paintings have gone to collectors in USA, France, Australia & New Zealand. Having been a professional artist for over 10 years I now work from home on commissions, finally realising my dream of becoming a full-time artist. I live on a farm on the Mid North Coast of NSW, Australia with my partner, our dog & 6 horses. We raise beef cattle - mainly Angus.
