About Lynn Darnelle

In 1958 Crayola introduced the 64 count box of crayons. Now I wasn’t born until much later but when I got my first 64 count box (with the sharpener in the back) an artist was born! I remember reading each crayon to learn the names of the colors. No more basic orange, red, green or blue it was Burnt Orange, Magenta, Evergreen and Cornflower Blue! It was one of my most prized childhood possessions, right up there with my Barbie Townhouse.

Finally! I had the tools I needed to color the world the way I really saw it. It was as if with that box, the limitations on creativity were removed. Soon coloring books that kept me occupied for hours as a child weren’t enough…. too limiting. WHY color what they dictated on those pages? I can create my own color pages and paper dolls that looked like ME and reflected MY lifestyle! Unbeknownst to me, I was on the path to discover my God given talent and passion in life.

I continued drawing beyond elementary school, after many leave it behind, and went on to college with a major in art illustration. A formal art education gave me art history, structure, formal technique, and skill refinement (as well as a husband). What it didn’t give me was vision, personal style and purpose. That comes with life lessons, prayer, love/hate, destiny, in sight, pain and suffering, more prayer, resolution, discovery, strength, confidence, loss/gain, surrendering, sacrifice, identity and empowerment.

My absolute favorite artist/musician/performer/composer/lyricist is Prince. I admire him most for his ability to do what he loves and love what he does, his music. Regardless of how you feel about him, one thing is true, he doesn’t just create music, it is a part of his very being. My vision is to capture images that tell the unconventional stories from my unique perspective and cause an emotional connection whether humorous, sentimental or thought provoking. I look forward to the day when my work gives me the satisfaction of being as creative and as clever as Prince’s lyrics and compositions, and a true experience like his performances.
As for purpose, the Bible says, …………‘The gift can not be greater than the Giver’.
