ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Dunham is a contemporary abstract expressionist drawing combined inspiration from architectural, industrial and organic elements. The process involves intuitive action and reaction without the use of specific imagery, predetermined palette or sketches. Evolved from spontaneity, the work is a reflection of emotion during creation. A deliberate sense of order and pace is achieved through the interaction of a blending of color and articulated line. Materials are applied and manipulated with a variety of utensils to create layers and texture. Her choice of materials is varied including Venetian plaster, concrete, acrylics, tints and glazes on canvas.
PERSONAL HISTORY
The daughter of an art teacher, she was endlessly encouraged by her mother who instilled in her at an early age to fearlessly embrace her creativity. Furthermore, her elementary school art teacher inspired her to continuously be in search of new and interesting media to incorporate in her work. In her teens Dunham enrolled in drawing, print making and metal smithing classes at Moore College of art in Philadelphia. She made the decision to pursue a career in art at Pratt Institute where she received her BFA in graphic design and illustration. While focusing on a career in commercial art as well as more recently floral design, she has continued working in pastels and acrylics. It was recent move to the Hamptons which precipitated her recent emergence as a serious abstract expressionist.
In 2005 Dunham was working in a flower shop in Southampton, NY where she was storing paintings in a shared space with Casa Chic, a contemporary furniture store. Owners of Casa Chic, Eleana and Giorgio, discovered her paintings and sold several in a short time. She continues to work in her Southampton studio.
