The first painting on this site Zion's Children, is a continuation of the mystical series begun in 1985 by artist Maria Alquilar. These works on metal, wood and sometimes, as in this case, velvet explore most of humanities need to create Heroes, Saints and other Divinities to absorb and share their suffering. Alquilar enhances the mysteries and myths of major religions of the world. These include Voodoo, Catholicism, Asian as well as pre Catholic Mexican and Southwest indigenous people’s spiritual rituals. The Religious Edifices, paintings, sculpture, milagros, retablos , dances, music, allow most people to express and give voice to their perception of the ancient mysteries that are the basis of all religions. It can lead some to salvation, and enlightenment. It helps many to adjust to the grief, suffering and burdens of their lives.
Alquilar was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her resume is extensive and can be viewed on her website maria-alquilar.com. She is in many collections in the United States, Mexico and Italy. Her work in Public Art is well known. In 1990, she was awarded the General Administrations Honor Award for Bien Venida Y Vaya Con Dios,(Welcome And Go With God), a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the Mexican people. It is located at the border in San Luis, AZ. Other collections include the Smithsonian, National Museum of American Art, The Rockefeller Collection, John Michael Kohler Collection, Kohler, WI and, John Michael Kohler Art Center and Museum, Sheboygan, WI, Dante Museum, Ravenna, Italy.
