Maureen Haldeman was born in Holland, raised in Montreal and now resides in Malibu, California. Her initial interest in photography came from the sights she saw while working in a job that required world travel and from living in such cities as New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
After refining her basic photographic skills, she completed fine art photography classes at UCLA and established MJH Photography, where she initially spent her time photographing children and families and gained a reputation for portraiture. Since that time she has expanded her photographic horizons to include a wide range of subject matter, including architectural photography, street photography and photography of all realms of nature and the urban landscape.
Maureen has taught basic 35 mm photography and darkroom skills at the college level, done freelance work for various publications including The Los Angeles Times, The Malibu Times, Malibu Surfside News and Palisades Post, and has been commissioned to do many private and specialized projects. Her photographs have been exhibited in several galleries in Los Angeles California, are in public collections (City of Malibu) and are held by private collectors in The United States, Canada, Australia and Europe. They are also frequently used in set design for Film and TV. In 2011 she was appointed to serve on the 11 member Malibu Arts Task Force, the first committee formed by the City of Malibu to identify public art opportunities and implement a public arts policy for the City. The work of the committee has served as the basis for the development of the city’s first Arts Commission.
Maureen Haldeman possesses a unique style formed by her multicultural life and experiences. Her work can be both representational and abstract but it all has a similar quality; the images focus on texture and light and impart a painterly quality. Whether capturing dramatic shadows cast by a late day sun, a moody seascape or patterns produced by simple objects, Maureen is acutely conscious of the relationship between light and shadow and the element of composition.
