About Mel Steinhauer

Welcome to my favorite 'Scenes From Far and Near' ! Just select a gallery and click on any image for better viewing and for an easy selection of print sizes, mats, frames, canvas wraps, metal or acrylic prints, cards, pricing and shipping information.

My love for photography began as a boy when I was taught the basics by my father. During a tour of duty in Vietnam, I purchased an expensive Nikon SLR camera and dreamed of becoming a photographer when I returned home. A family of my own and a new career put that dream on hold, however I always enjoyed taking photographs. Several years ago, after surviving another kind of war with cancer, I began to really see the beauty in our world. Equipped with a new awareness of life and improved photographic vision, I am now able to find beautiful scenes almost everywhere.

Mel Steinhauer Greeting Cards

A Vietnam Retrospective

An old man looking back on a young man's tour of duty in Vietnam, 1968-69 in a Combat K-9 Unit. My original Kodachrome or Ektachrome color slides now converted to digital format and enhanced. Click on any one to enlarge it and to read my brief descriptive story for that particular scene. Due to age and degraded image quality, they are not considered to be " Fine Art " and are displayed here mainly to share brief stories from long ago with friends, veterans, dog-lovers or others interested in Military Working Dogs. As such, they are only available for sale as the 5 x 7 greeting card, which could easily be matted and placed in a frame that you purchase locally.
