Art has always been a major part of my life, and when I did not paint, I was always creating something. There were many years that I did not paint. I was waiting for the time in my life when I would have the time and the energy and that came with my retirement from my career as a nurse. Painting is sometimes a passion, I have to paint…an idea will keep me awake at night. When life gets too busy for me to paint I get frustrated and when I paint I can forget to eat or drink. My dog comes and reminds me that its time for her to eat.
My art appreciation is growing and changing with more exposure to the art world. My own art is evolving as I love to try new subjects and new support materials..that is how Istarted painting on leather. I like that it is unique to me. I like to paint animals on the leather, the grain of the leather seems to lend itself to fur or feathers.
I use photographic references, especially of animals and collect more photographs when travelling. I love to watch what the atmospheric changes do to the colors in the landscape.
I rarely use any other media than oil. I love the way I can manipulate the paint and paint over if I mess up! I get excited as I watch the subject of my painting develop from a smear of color as I add the details to make it realistic.
My style is very realistic and although I admire the “loose” style of others, it just doesn’t, at this time, seem possible for me to “let go”. Maybe I will someday!
