Investigate identity
Here are my most recent artworks. As artistic creation implies being in constant evolution, my production has evolved a lot during the last 2 years. Since Fall 2008 where I worked with Lisa Petiteau ¨C working in Art History and writing a thesis about Female Art, I have been deeply called by portraying contemporary identity quest.
What does this mean ?
As an orphan, an adopted child, an expatriate, an immigrant¡ I lived in several places : Asia, South-America, Europe and North-America. Having been daily with yellow, red and black, I often feel as an ¡°half-blood¡± white.
Coming from unknown biological family, I was educated by such diverse people like devoted nurses of the orphanage, Buddhist monk and Lao boy, Amazonian Shaman and black moms, bipolar adoptive mother and Army officer father-in-law¡
Lots of influences, lots of trips, lots of marvelous experiences in nature, lots of family violence, lots of spiritual gifts¡ All of this making me a strong survivor, believing in the healing power of Spiritual Faith and Love in Action. But no real roots : no tradition to ground in, no place to originate from, no history as an anchor, no family to belong to.
Create as a way of living
Creation is my way of LIVING. Creation is my way of communicating. Creation is my way of loving. As long as I remember, I was drawing and writing. I conceived my first book at the age of 10, when I wrote this story and illustrated it and cutting pages to assemble them inside a cover, and putting the title and my name as the author. All in secret, because nobody encouraged art in my family.
For them, being an artist was being a fool, damned and condemned to live miserably and isolated. Which, in consequence, took me a long time to make my art public and to even dare to name me as an artist. I finally did it because of the freedom that I discovered by living in Canada, especially in Quebec. Immigrating in Montreal was like a second birth, feeling for the first time close to people around and recognized by them as part of the community. All of a sudden, I was free to express myself in a society where being entrepreneur was a pride, being a single mother was a courage, being a newcomer was an inspiration, being a foreigner was a richness¡
Make a living from art
In 2005, I chose to make a living from art and working as a full-time artist, continuing to draw, write and photography, and beginning to paint with acrylic. Working first intensively with colours, in semi-figurative and abstraction, my gestural artwork progressively included more and more textures, materials and raw aspects ¨C keeping alive expressionism and primitivism which are my basic artistic currents.
¡öPortraits are speaking about this identity quest which is the 21st century humankind : transfer, hybrid, permeable, androgen, mutant.
¡öAbstracts are speaking about the planet face to our place on it : water as the ultimate real issue, economy and media as a new dictatorship, power of Being against empowering Having, sacred of universal Earth against individuality sacralized¡
I create to allow personal authentic investigation about who We Are by questioning who I Am. Each of my artwork provokes this questioning, calling the looker inside of her/him to better know who she/he is ¨C supported by the dramatic effect of my art, letting life pulsation through emotion to arise.
