Nancy Craig has had the good fortune to study with several very talented artists.
Her beginning explorations found her at the side of the fascinating and truly talented Paula Neglia in Stroudsburg, PA. Paula taught her that you paint with your brain - she taught how to 'see' and to allow the brain to tell your hands to paint what is being seen. Their visions and interpretations were often quite different as Paula painted with abandon and Nancy Craig struggled to capture what she saw but as they painted side by side it felt like the artist was absorbing not only lessons on technique and color and design but also some of Paula's fabulous spirit and outlook on life. They were wonderful years that will always treasured by this Artist. Some additional classes with several other local teachers, including Sally Millspaugh, in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania were taken and with each the goal was to look at different ways of painting what the artist saw and felt. Most recently, after relocating to the beautiful state of North Carolina, Nancy Craig has studied with Summerfield Artist Shelia Williams who is as delightful as she is inspiring and her amazing talent and stunningly beautiful art encourage Nancy Craig as she continues developing in this fascinating skill of painting.
The subjects favored by Nancy Craig are skies and trees and you will find both in many of her works. Her colors are sometimes monochromatic, sometimes vivid and bold and once in a while soft and pale. She has much admiration for Helen VanWyk even while knowing that her style might never be to paint her way - the Artist has still learned much by studying and watching her and reading her books. In her earlier years Nancy only seemed able to paint in total realism but now that is tempered with hints of impressionism. Her medium is always Oil - to her Oil is the very essence of painting. Nancy Craig loves the texture, the feel and luster of the paint and enjoys experimenting with it constantly as she applies it to canvas. Different brush techniques and some work with palette knife produce varied textures but always the intent is to put on canvas the excitement and beauty that she sees in the world around her.
The Artist hopes that you enjoy viewing her work. She paints for the sheer pleasure and satisfaction of painting and feels humbled by those who chose to have her art hanging in their homes.
