'Exquisite pastel portraits from your cherished photos.'
Born in Venezuela, Nanybel Salazar started painting with watercolors and oils at the age of five. Soon enough she discovered charcoal and pastels and fell in love with portraiture, which became her self-taught and lifelong pursuit. She studied Architecture in Caracas and Architecture of Interiors and French in Paris. Back in Caracas, Nanybel founded a unique arts and crafts business, which launched her into the national spotlights, hosting her own live segment in a weekly television show.
After moving to the United States in 1996, Nanybel quickly earned a reputation for her realistic portrait style and won several awards at fine art competitions.
In 2011, after years of doing portraits by commission and teaching private lessons in portraiture, she added floral paintings to her portfolio. As Nanybel gained recognition she became a Juried Member of the Portrait Society of Atlanta, a Member of Excellence of the Southeastern Pastel Society, and a member of the Degas Pastel Society, the Portrait Society of America, the Women Painters of the South, North Cobb Arts League, the Quinlan Visual Arts Center and several Art websites. Nanybel’s paintings have been accepted as finalists at numerous juried exhibitions winning 12 awards between 2011 and 2014.
She has served as a volunteer for the The Portrait Society of Atlanta and has written articles for their prestigious FOLIO magazine; she has also worked as a model for groups of artists.
Nanybel has had the privilege to study with master Portraitists Jon Houghton and Thomas Nash as well as with master Pastellist Fred Somers.
“Realism and detail attract me like iron to a magnet: the light reflected in an eye, a facial expression.”
“Although I have tried to embrace traditional techniques, different media, and alternative subjects, I invariably surrender to my passion for portraiture relying on my personal methods.”
“At night in my studio, so quiet and surrounded by the finest art books and supplies, it feels just like Heaven.”
