Growing up in the suburbs of Detroit, MI., and now Houston, TX based, Abstract Expressionist, Nicole Gavin's, exposure to culture and history fostered a lifelong love of the arts. Her grandmother was an artist and her family, large contributors to the Detroit Institute of Arts, have engulfed her in the art world since a child. Although she never picked up a paintbrush until late 2010, she explored a variety of artistic endeavors while growing up and was active in community theater, choir, and was publicly acknowledged for several speeches, short stories and poems she wrote, to include a Detroit Free Press writing award in 1994 at the age of 14.
Known mostly for the vivid color and the erotic nude scenes in which she paints, Gavin's paintings have been dubbed as, 'passionate, visceral, structural, immediate, raw, spontaneous, chaotic, colorful, edgy, vibrant, dynamic, cool, urban and soulful', creating a unique visual language with depth and feeling. 'You feel her energy jump from the canvas'. She is diverse and unpredictable, using different materials, themes, textures and techniques and it rightfully reflects her unfocused, eclectic and random persona. She has been said to be, 'all over the place'.....and visibly, so is her art, keeping her audience thoroughly entertained.
Gavin’s work can be found in a myriad of private collections within the United States, as well being featured in various group and solo exhibitions. She was a semi-finalist for RawArtist’s Indie Art Awards (rawartists.org) – Houston, TX - Artist of the Year, Nov 15th 2012. Recent exhibitions include, Houston Free Press Artopia 2012 and 2014, Houston Art Crawl 2012 and 2013, BeHuman Gallery – Bisou Group Show 2014, Jomar Visions Hardy and Nance Street Studio, Kallinen Gallery, BeHuman Gallery – Citizens of the World Group Show (April 2014), Houston Wine Festival 2011, along with several solo exhibitions to include CHA Champagne and Wine Bar, Houston, TX July 2012, “The Newfangled” at Public House Heights (May 2013-August 2013), and “Naked Women and Dirty Thoughts” at The Next Door (Houston, TX, June 2014).
In May of 2014, Nicole was chosen to show at one of the largest, International Art Competitions, 'Art Prize', held from September 24, 2014 through October 12, 2014, in Grand Rapids, MI. Art Prize draws over 400,000 visitors, with 1,537 entries in 2014 and boasts two $400,000 prizes and eight category awards worth $160,000.
In Gavin's creations, you will find abstract and expressionist artwork, rich in patterns, geometric shapes and forms (some 3D), female figures, organic design elements and symbols, bohemian undertones, vivid color and a high level of texture — all of which carry these paintings beyond a standard, strictly visual art experience…, “they tell a story”. Her paintings invite touch, feeling and reward with a multi-sensory experience.
Gavin creates her paintings with joy and reverence, as a celebration of love and life. She has a personal and emotional connection with the number 11, a tribute to her late father, and you will see this number frequently displayed in her work. She works from life, drawings, photographs, emotion, poetry and a lot of imagination. The subjects of her study are, 'the world around us, the world inside us, and the new realities we create'.
Nicole has been featured as the Nov. 2011 Highlight, Mod Artist, for Houston's Modern Epiphanies (http://modernepiphanies.com/?p=745) and an additional article has also been wrote about her on the same site, dubbing her as 'The Girl Who Never Sleeps' -http://modernepiphanies.com/?p=1933. She was also a featured Artist in April 2012 for All Houston Art Genres (www.allhoustonartgenres.com). Gavin was also a semi-finalist for RawArtist’s Indie Art Awards (rawartists.org) – Houston, TX - Artist of the Year, Nov 15th 2012. She was also mentioned as a Houston Press 2014 Artopia favorite by Houston Press, Art Attack blogger, Cherise Luter: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/artattack/2014/01/fashion_art_merge_beautifully.php
