A native Texan, Peggy Kingsbury holds an associate's degree in fine art and is a member of Oil Painters of America, Outdoor Painters Society, and Alla Prima International. She has pursued a professional art career for 15 years.
With no background in art, Kingsbury worked hard to learn sound principles of making art. She polished drawing skills, learned the intricacy and complexity of color, and was amazed at the importance of shapes and composition. The hard work was a small price to pay. She says, “The love of it urged me to a lifelong pursuit.” Three of the reasons she paints include:
• An enhanced way of seeing.
•The awe-inspiring quantity to learn—about art and artists—more than
one lifetime can hold
•The camaraderie and encouragement of other artists. In fact, Kingsbury credits amazing instructors and exploring the world of plein air painting with good friends as her inspiration.
Finding subject matter wherever she is, Kingsbury wants to paint from life. This can be standing in a field of wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country, near a rushing river in Colorado or New Mexico, on the streets of a village in Europe, in a charming interior, or contemplating a still life set up in her studio or backyard. Kingsbury prefers to paint directly (alla prima). She uses a variety of textures and edges as she seeks to convey the spirit of her subject.
When asked to explain the attraction of her work, one viewer said, “Her strong design attracts me from a distance, but the luminosity of color captures my attention close up'
