REIF ERICKSON is a regional artist with works in public, corporate, and private collections throughout the Pacific Coast. Reif (pronounced ray-f) has been pursuing his art career for the last 35 years and contributes much of his success to his continuing practice of painting with pastels “on location” in what he calls FRESH AIR® painting. Through careful observation and technical expertise, Reif achieves masterful landscapes of his travels in California, Hawaii, the Southwest, China and France and England and Eastern Europe.
A native of Eastern Washington, Reif returned to university studies at the age of 26 and graduated with honors from Gonzaga University in 1981. Shortly thereafter, the Russian born colorist Sergei Bongart influenced Reif to paint outdoors. Recognized continually for his talents, Reif has won awards in numerous competitions throughout his career including: 1st Artist awarded Surewest’s “Bringing Art Back to Business” (included image on phone directory, 2004); Best of Show Placer Art League, 2010, Artist’s Choice -Point Reyes Plein Air May 2004; Best Pastel - Carmel Art Festival May 2004; Best of Show - Lodi Art & Cultural Center December 2003; Best of Show - RMPAP Estes Park Plein Air August 2003; Best of Show - Sierra Pastel Society October 2000; Award of Excellence (Best Quick Draw) - La Quinta Desert Plein Air Feb. 2001; Best of Show -Yosemite Renaissance XVI February 2001; California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition, ‘95,’00 -’07. 1st in Pastel from the University Art Open 2008. In 1991 Reif was honored by the Pastel Society of the West Coast as a Distinguished Pastellist. Reif is a member of the California Art Club of Pasadena (est. 1909), , and Past President of the Pastel Society of the West Coast.
Reif was featured in the The Pastel Journa (Sept’03) in International Artist (Sept’03), and in the book Pure Color the Best of Pastel (’06). Reif has authored the book “Fresh Air® Painting” in 2009.
