Robert grew up in a small first nations community named Saugeen First Nation, Ontario, Canada. Born 1979, Robert's life as an artist began in 1996. It was around then, in his teenage years, he discovered a whole new world. You see, growing up he knew nothing of his Ojibway traditions. Learning more inspired Robert to create, share what he learned and express it through art.
There was a point in Roberts life that changed everything. He fasted for four days and nights, up to this point in his work Robert used solid colors and basic painting techniques. The man who put Robert out on the fast went and sat with him during the third day of fasting and says to him 'do you see that tree over there? what color is that tree?' Robert thought about it and said 'green, with brown bark'. The man laughs and says 'never mind'.
'Look at this flower here and tell me, what colors do you see?' the man said. It was a trillium and Robert replied 'there is white and a bit of purple in it'. 'look closer' he says, 'many people don't see whats really there, If you look closer you can see reds, blues, yellows, many colors. This is how you will paint later in life'. Then the man said 'This is only the first step' The next step Robert will have to fast again for six days and nights, then He will learn the meaning of each color that he creates.
One day Robert did a painting shortly after the fast and discovered a technique using a dusting cloth and towel. He is able to achieve many hues of color by using as little paint as possible.
Some time after Robert ran into him again and showed him some art work. The man just smiled at him and said ' I told you so' Robert has yet to do his six day fast, one day soon he will. Then there will be a whole new story to tell and share.
