Sean Griffin (b. 1949- ) is an award-winning American fine art and portrait photographer living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest of the United States. His work had been recognized by The Smithsonian, the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association, The Tacoma Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau and FineArt America.
Sean was born in the tiny northern California lumber town of McCloud, located on the slopes of Mount Shasta, but was raised mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area. He developed a passion for photography in 1974 when a friend lent him a 35mm SLR Pentax camera to take on a week-long bicycle tour of the California coast. During that journey (which also launched a 21-year career in journalism) he stopped at the Weston Gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea, fell in love with Edward Weston's breathtaking photography, and resolved to learn how to use a camera to capture the right thing at the right moment in the right way. The same friend who lent him the Pentax encouraged his pursuit by lending him his darkroom equipment and the multi-volume Time-Life Photography series of books.
Photography remained an occasional hobby for Sean until 2009, when a business owner in Olympia, Wash. happened upon one of Sean's abstract photographs, and invited him to show his work at an exhibition in her new building. The exhibit was successful, and it reawakened in Sean the passion ignited three decades earlier. A year later, he retired and has been devoted full-time to photography ever since.
Sean seeks the extraordinary in the ordinary -- a bias that informs much of his work. With his abstract imagery he exploits the unique qualities of digital image capture and finds a delicate and unseen grandeur.
