Original art, photography and digital art by Artist, Sharon Irla.
SHARON IRLA credits her mother (an artist and free-lance dressmaker) with her creative 'wiring'. It was around the age of 5, when Irla began copying her mother's fashion sketches, which would lay the foundation for Irla's artistic path. A self-taught painter, Irla's work is recognized for it's rich detail and luminescent skin tones, achieved through 'Old Master' techniques, which she also teaches in her workshops. Inspired by the strong, resilient, Cherokee women in her family, Irla seeks to represent contemporary, traditional and feminine and matriarchal themes and to invite the viewer into a non-stereotypical perspective of Native women, from a Native woman's perspective.
While her mother's influence catapulted Irla's dreams of becoming a fine artist, her father's 'starving artist' admonitions grounded those dreams in practicality and Irla's career took the path of commercial computer graphics, instead. But, once her only offspring reached adulthood, Irla started painting murals and faux finishes in multi-million dollar homes of the Dallas, TX area. After almost 4 years of commissions, Irla relocated to her Cherokee roots in Oklahoma, to creates realistic portraits that convey the strength and honest beauty of Indigenous women.
Her background in computer graphics and working with photos, created another avenue of artist expression through photography and digital art. The scope of her photography includes Native American subject matter, Nature, old barns, vintage cars, rusty and distressed still life, or just great lines, color, texture and light.
Irla’s work can be seen at the Spider Gallery in Tahlequah, OK, as well as at regional art markets and shows including the Cherokee National Holiday Art Show, and Trail Of Tears Art Show at the Cherokee Heritage Center (both in Tahlequah, OK); the Cherokee Art Market in Catoosa, Ok; South Eastern Art Show & Market (SEASAM) in Chickasaw Nation; The Competitive Show at Five Civilized Tribes Museum and others.
