About Smith Catholic Art

Smith Catholic Art started in 2001 as a response to St. John Paul II's 1999 Letter to Artists and the New Evangelization. It endeavors to answer the call to make visual the beauty and richness of the Catholic faith.

'Our mission is to create beautiful, contemporary, Catholic art - honoring tradition, present to current aesthetic sensibilities, and congruent with Church Teaching.'

Cameron Smith began his pursuit of beauty and fine art in 1993, when he and some fellow design students at NCSU founded the Ant Farm artists' co-op in Raleigh, NC. It was then that Smith, searching to define art for himself, concluded that art is an 'interplay with the Creative Spirit, the Holy Spirit, in a given medium, and the tangible results.' This definition motivated an intense focus that continues still. 'Beauty is elusive. It's fleeting and uncontainable, and at the same time objective and concrete.'

Smith's artistic explorations have spanned the gamut in style and subject, and at times this left him feeling disjointed. In 2009, sixteen years into it, Smith received a giant payoff. He credits the Holy Spirit and says, 'Fitting that I should be working on Immaculate Heart of Mary at the time. It was like a fog lifting, and suddenly I could see how all of these inspirations connect and fit together. It was certainly the most rewarding moment I had yet experienced in my career.' Smith describes it as 'the instant I realized my artistic vision. I was filled with a sense of gratitude and so many questions and quandaries were answered.'

Now Smith explains, 'It's 'composition' that is the underlying language of beauty. It spans all boundaries of style and subject. As wonderful as brushwork, texture, and all the individual aspects are, they are nothing unless placed upon a solid composition.'

As an outlet for his love of teaching, and a vehicle for sharing the ideas so pivotal to his own work, Smith created Cameron Smith Academy of Art, and online art school. (www.smithacademy.online) Smith Academy features courses on all levels, beginner to professional. Although the core of the program is composition, a range of courses are in the works, including a color system course that Smith says 'dismisses the notion of color 'primaries'.'

Cameron Smith's Catholic artwork adorns shrines and chapels across the US, including Our Lady of Lebanon Chapel at the Basilica of the National Shrine in Wash, DC. His award winning figures and landscapes are widely collected and featured by Walls Fine Art Gallery (www.wallsgallery.com). Smith resides with his wife and 5 children in coastal North Carolina.
