Can't get away from it! Whatever the work (representational or abstract) an artist creates the piece rooted in a sense of place. Mine is Northren California: its history and golden beauty. Such a footing makes a work accountable; it compels it to become something more than a private notion.
But, then, even the assurance of 'a sense of place' requires its own grounding: a rooting in something greater than itself. What is that? In the end, the best art if more than the artist's talent or private imaginations. This is, hopefully, the vision that goes into any piece of mine.

Stephen L. Golay paints in Original Oils. Currently he is completing several series:
'Native American Chiefs'. A collection of twenty striking animated portraits.
'Historic California'. A collection of thirty scenes of Golden California (San Francisco, the Sacramento Delta, the Mother Lode).
'Mother Lode Main Streets'. A collection of twenty scenes of California's Gold Rush towns.
'The Provocatives'. A series works that, without shame, make a point. See the complete list of projected titles in the Artist's blog, chieflywestern.wordpress.com. You will be - what can we say - surprised!
Each work is crafted in an unusual style that shouts, 'This is a Golay'. Again, see the Artist's blog.
ALSO NOTE: Stephen L. Golay is an authorized painter of the striking photography of the owner of the blog 'Little Green Footballs', Charles Johnson. See Artist's blog for details (chieflywestern.wordpress.com).
