Susan Washington grew up in Brooklyn, NY in a creative family. Her father and Japanese godmother taught her sumi ink painting when she was seven. These early lessons were the genesis of a life involved in art and fashion. Susan worked for Christian Dior NYC in the office of the President and VP as a show organizer until relocating to the Pocono Mountains to raise a family.
She studied art at Northampton Community College and has studied with sculptor Andrea Rimberg and painter Barbara Briggs in addition to studying with and working alongside her husband, British artist, Stephen Washington.
Susan works with mixed media collage, producing works utilizing layered surface textures, rich colors and expressive line work. Her influences include the Abstract Expressionists, especially those of the New York School, particularly Robert Motherwell. She is also inspired by artists working in collage and mixed media, including Conrad Marca-Relli and Anton Tapies.
Susan has exhibited widely in the Pocono Mountains at ArtSpace, Main Street Gallery, The Castle Inn, Dutot Museum, Center for the Performing Arts, Soho in the ‘Burg. She is scheduled for a joint exhibition with her husband in April 2015 at the Pocono Community Theatre, a selected feature artist in July at the Bethlehem House Gallery and has a solo show booked for early 2016 in Easton, PA. Susan is represented by the AFP Gallery in Southport UK for print sales and her work has been featured at the Atkinson Art Center in Southport, UK.
