With such innovation evident in his work, the visionary artist Maes is destined to take the art world by storm.

(by Art Historian, Dr. Barbara Aust-Wegemund )

Thomas Maes, born 1983 in Belgium, shows an extraordinary collection of paintings with ordinary objects in an unusual context. They attract the viewers interest by giving new meanings to familiar things. The use of ordinary objects in unfamiliar spaces is joined to his desire to create poetic imagery as well as his consciousness to think about the Universe. Thomas Maes described the process of painting as the art of putting colors side by side in such a way that their real aspect is effaced, so that familiar objects - clouds, amphoras, houses, trees or cubic forms - become united in a single poetically disciplined image. The poetry of these images dispense with any symbolic significance, old or new. Each of these recurring themes can be interpreted differently and has significant meanings.

His paintings entitled “Dark Matter”, “A New World” or “Civilization” represent images which evoke a kind of mystery. Thomas Maes' constant play with reality and illusion can be attributed to his interest in history, science and culture. Since seven years, the Belgian artist is living and working at the Greek island of Crete, surrounded by the ancient Minoan civilization and archetypical, archaelogical find spots. In his artworks Maes is playing back and forth, zapping reality and illusion on and off, reflecting his constantly shifting perception during his mental time journey. Since many years, Thomas Maes formed his own signature in a very clean, concise and precise style. Thomas Maes' interest is to inspire us; his works represent both dreams and apparent paradoxes at once. The themes and motifs encourage reflecting upon our world, Mankind, Genesis, Macrocosm and the Universe.

Thomas Maes' works exhibit a rare virtuosity which is instantly striking. An expert colorist, the artist's paintings evoke the abstract canvases of Joan Miró as well as turn of the century Symbolism and even Surrealism. His images are an amalgamation of the natural world with an architectural bent, in which geometric structures connect with amorphous forms. His arrangements are controlled, yet the elements float with a joyous and invigorating freedom. His painstaking technique of preparing his design for weeks and even months before he places oil on canvas is evident in his superb compositions. Maes' oeuvre is wonderfully reminiscent of many movements in the visual arts, while resonating with musical harmony.

Born in Belgium, Maes draws his inspiration from his current home in Crete. His works are drawing the attention of international collectors, and his designs have appeared in a book on modern sculpture and are to feature in three more forthcoming books. The artist is influenced by a number of fields, including design, technology, architecture, and archaeology, as well as art history. His work has been shown in art fairs and will be part of upcoming auctions.

Thomas Maes

Sculptures- design
always passionate by researching and discovering scientific and psychological subjects,
studying problems and discovering new possibilities.
Modern-classic sculptures out of many different materials.
In a world full of hi-tech, I try to give the hi-tech some more soul and natural beauty,
by designing and making them fit and in a more nature like environment.

In my paintings I bring to subject that which goes on in our world, reflected in a differently designed parallel universe. Always delving into scientific subjects is a passion for me. Physics, engineering, psychology, astronomy... Working out new ideas and solutions. Bringing this subject on a canvas or in a sculpture. Through symbolism i bring different aspects of problems and solutions to the front. Why symbolism? Because, i like my viewing public to think for their selves, opening a gate to suggest, look in the correct direction and give them the freedom to discover a world behind our world. A world of unlimited opportunity!
I spent a lot of time in research and making design drawings for my paintings.
Of every painting or sculpture always has been made first a design drawing. And a lot of pre research on the subject. Some of my paintings can take months, before i even touch the canvas or medium for sculpture. As most important to have all elements in a perfect harmony for the approaching subject. Experimenting on many different materials and new technologies is important to bring out the most correct resold. This is why i have build out my atelier to 5 different, design, painting, sculpture, electronics and mechanics and even a small lab. So i invite my viewers to enter a world of unending inspiration and opportunity. Welcome and enjoy!

Thomas Maes (Belgium): In the paintings of the Belgian artist, the prefered theme is the dream of dialogue between man and the environment. The colors are pastel shades with delicate nuances, the forms are also and well delineated in such a way that the atmosphere is suspended between past, present and future. We are in another dimension; a parallel world that lives suspended in a space that has its own rules, aromas and light. We are allowed to access and imagine; the artist takes us into the mystery of existence, thus calling into question the real world, his illusions-disappointments.
